The Davidic covenant Simplified

The Davidic Throne/Millennial Reign

By Rev Deb

The Kingdom

A.  The first predicted mention of the throne:
Gen. 49: 9,10 (predicting the 2nd coming of Christ).  Matt.  1:1-2 (showing Jesus coming from Judah’s line).

B.  Prophecies concerning the millennium throne:
1 Chron 17:10-15 (given to Christ, the greater Son of David).  Psalm 110:1-3 (written 20 yrs. After 1 Chron. 17)

C.  Covenant to David Prophesied:
2Sam. 7:4-17,  verse 11, Make mention of a royal lineage (later verified by Isaiah 7:13
There are 3 unconditional promises under the Davidic covenant:

1.  “The Land”  2Sa 7:10  "I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly,
this was first promised to AbraHam (Gen. 12) and then reiterated to David as an everlasting covenant.

2.  “A Royal Dynasty”  2Sa 7:11  even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you.
”Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."  2Sa 7:16

David knew that he was anointed by God (2 Sa 5:11-12).  So he wanted to build a house for Him because he saw how rich and elaborate his own house was that he had built for himself (2 Sa. 7:1-7).

God’s will, however, was not for David to build it, but rather He stated that He would build it Himself (2Sa. 7:11).   This “house” was to consist of a “Royal” Lineage” - “A House Of Kings”.  The house would ultimately end with David’s greater Son (Jesus), who would be established forever!  (2Sa. 7:8-16).  This was to show the unconditional way of grace (Heb. 3:1-7; 1Cor. 3:9).

3.  "An Everlasting Kingdom" - 2Sa 7:12,13  "When your days are complete
and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.   "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever (Lk. 1:33; Isa. 9:7).

Solomon’s birth was also prophesied to succeed his father David (2Sa.7:14,15).

2Sa 7:14 - I will be his father, and he shall be my son,... That is, I will be as kind unto him, and careful of him, as a father of a son; or he shall be, and appear to be my son, by adopting grace.  But My loving-kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.  Palms 89:27-37 brings to light the same prophetic message.

Solomon’s throne continued despite the fact that his seed fell under a curse (Jer.22:24-30).  Jeconiah’s line had been cursed so that no one from his line would be able to sit on the throne.

Mary’s husband Joseph was a direct descendant of Jeconiah and therefore under the same curse (Matt. 1:1-17).  So in order to continue His unconditional promise God, allowed the dynasty to be picked up through another son of Solomon- Nathan (Lk. 3:23-31).  This was to by-pass the curse on Jeconiah lineage.

This genealogy was then traced through Mary’s line through her father Eli.

D.    The virgin birth was an absolute essential to assure the sinless character of Christ and also to fulfill the Davidic covenant of a greater Son.

E.    Christ received the blood right through His earthly mother and His legal right through Joseph.

The virgin birth Guarantees that-

1.   David’s descendants would sit on the throne as promised forever!  (Isa. 9:6)
2.   And preserving intact the curse and restrictions given to Jeconiah and his offspring.  This fulfills the promise given through Jacob to his older son Judah in Gen. 49.

Additional Scripture verses concerning the Messianic line and divine descendancy
and kinship- Ps.2:6,7; 110, 89:3-4; 1Chron. 17:10-14; Isa. 9:1-7; 11:1-5; Jer.30:4-11; Ezek. 34:23-24; 37:24-25; Amos 9:11-15; Zech. 6:12-13.

The Dynasty of Kings-

There have been twenty descendants of David that have sat on the throne starting with Solomon (1Ki. 1:28-30), and continuing through Zedekiah (2 Chron. 36:11-14) who ruled in Jerusalem until the Babylonian exile (2Chron. 36:15-21).

Since the global dispersion in 70 A.D. which was prophesied through Moses (Deut. 28:63-68), there has not been any other descendant of David to sit or rule from David’s throne.

This was foretold by the minor prophet Hosea (Hos. 3:4-5).

The very next descendant of David to sit upon the throne will be the Messiah- Jesus Christ Himself at the second coming. He will come with all his glorious angles to judge those who survive the tribulation, both Jews and Gentiles (Matt. 25:31-45; Joel 3:1-2; Ezek 20:33-44).

Jesus is the only one qualified to sit on the throne of David forever ( Ps. 72:1; Lk.1:32; Rev. 1:5-7).

Ps. 72 affirms the future kingdom of justice and righteousness under the reign of the Messiah (Ps72:.5-7).   Isaiah also prophesied the characteristic nature of the millennium when describing the curse of the animal kingdom being lifted (Isa. 11:1-9).

Christ’s kingdom will start in Jerusalem and pan out to the entire world Ps. 72:8-11;
Dan. 2:34-35,44;  Isa.2:2-4).

Under this Millennial reign, the Gentiles will be blessed (Ps. 72:17-19).

Ps 89 also states that David’s descendant will reign (vs 27-29).

Conclusion

The promise to establish the kingdom depends solely on God’s faithfulness to His promise, not on humanity or any individual.  Even though David’s royal descendants departed from God for a time- God in His faithfulness to His oath will ultimately fulfill his kingdom promise in the last days Ps 89:30-37.

Even the Old Testament anticipated a new and better covenant that would replace the old Mosaic covenant (Jer. 31:31-34).  These gracious promises stem from the fact that Christ fulfilled God’s will by dying for the sins of the whole world, thus allowing the Gentiles to be a part of the new covenant in this present age.

The same gracious principles will be applied to Israel at the 2nd coming and into the millennium.  At that time according to Jer. 31: 31, 32 it will replace the Mosaic covenant and be written on their hearts, instead of tablets of stone.

Jeremiah describes this time as the time of Israel’s re-gathering and the time where they would once again be ruled by their Lord (Jer: 235-8; see also Ezek. 37; 39:25-29).

The proclamation of the truth of the Lord will no longer be necessary because “They will all know Him, from the least of them to the greatest...”  Jer. 31:35,36

Jeremiah said that the promise to Israel is as certain as the decree of the moon and the stars.
